Description
This set of our classic Campagnolo bicycle from the 1970's will be a big help to a bicycle restorer or for a collector. In miniature, they represent the best of Italian precision workmanship. When you actually hold and use these tools, you can see how they were specialized to a specific task -- from the mind of Tullio Campagnolo, famous for the invention of the quick release hub. Mechanics in an event like the Tour de France or the Giro d'Italia has to get the bike fixed right, with exactly the correct tool, in the absolute minimum amount of time.
The classic Campagnolo T-wrench (phots #2) consists of two 6mm Allen keys with a 8mm socket at the bottom. At a total length of 95mm, it fits perfectly in the hand. It is stamped "BREV.CAMP.", an abbreviation of "brevetto Campagnolo". ("Brevetto" is Italian for the word "patent".)
The chainwheel 6mm Allen key tool (photos #3 and #4) is exquisite, if such a term can be applied to a bicycle tool. If at first appears to be a simple 6mm L-shaped Allen key, and that is not untrue. What makes this unique is the knurled piece on the longer arm of the tool. It is placed perfecctly to spin the allen wrench. It is also stamped "BREV.CAMP.".
The Campagnolo wrench (photos #4 and #5) is 15mm and 172mm in length, This is the perfect tool to cinch up a crankset. This wrench is often called the "peanut butter" wrench and I suppose it could serve as a peanut butter spreader. But that would be a sacrilege in my book. The handle is perfectly roughed to help the grip and inside the roughened area it reads BREV. INTER. CAMPAGNOLO, for "brevetto internazionale", or international patent. This suggest this wrench comes from a later production when Campagnolo's name became known worldwide for the best in bicycle componentry.
The Campagnolo seatpost wrench (photos #7 through #9) is perfectly suited to the task for the old-style 2-bolt seatposts. The closed-end of the wrench is 10mm while the open end is 13mm. The overall length is approximately 125mm and the offset is approximately 28mm. The wrench features the classic Campagnolo logo of a sun with a hat in it, over which is written the word "Campagnolo". There is no patent indicated on this wrench.
These wrenches were never used much -- my 1973 Campy-equipped Raleigh International just did not need much service. But, the tools hung around in my toolbox for many years and look it. The surface is rust-free, although somewhat worn on the L-shaped Allen key (see photo #6). I could easily polish these tools up, but I know that collectors want real tools, not polished museum specimens.
I sold my Raleigh International and its Campy components and have never used the tools since. (Believe it or not, I moved onto a Cannondale ST800 with a Suntour derailleur; I seem to have an affinity for old brands.) But handling these tools again sure brought back a lot of great memories.
The set of four tools will be mailed, carefully wrapped and appropriately insured, in a USPS Flat rage small box (the one commonly called the "VHS tape box"). Shipping in this manner will be charged at .00. Please advise if you desire shipping in any other manner.
