Description
This is a reproduction of a pre-war Elgin bike rear rack mounted tail light. The light is 39mm (1.54") in diameter and would go into a hole in the rear of the rack that is approximately 1 9/16" in diameter. The red lens unscrews for installing the light or changing the bulb. To change the batteries, unscrew the screw in the middle of the tube and pull out the innards. The switch is a toggle switch recessed in the rear of the light. In case you are missing the original bracket, a bracket is also included. The light has one 3V LED bulb and uses 2 AA batteries. The last two photos show the original tube in two styles of Elgin racks. The third to the last photo shows the reproduction next to an original. The original was wired to a large battery in a battery pod, but this unit is self contained. The fourth to the last photo shows the innards and lens and bracket on an original tube. If you have the tube and just want the innards, lens, and bracket, contact me and we'll arrange for you to buy just that.
The light is made from heavy duty plastic and is unfinished.
If you want to paint the tube and bracket to match your bike, remove the bracket, the red lens, and the innards. Give the plastic a light sanding so the paint will adhere better. Be sure to use a plastic compatible spray paint like Krylon. You may want to use a primer coat before the finish coat.
